Gendo Ikari, appearing first in Neon Genesis Evangelion episode one, is the supreme commander of NERV, an organization dedicated to defending humanity against the Angels. He is the father of Shinji Ikari, the reluctant pilot of Evangelion Unit-01.

Driven by a cold and calculating pragmatism, Gendo prioritizes the completion of the Human Instrumentality Project, a complex and potentially catastrophic scheme designed to force human evolution and reunite with his deceased wife, Yui Ikari. His methods are often ruthless and manipulative, causing immense emotional distress to those around him, including his son.

Gendo's past is shrouded in mystery, but it is revealed that he was once a promising scientist who met Yui Ikari and became deeply involved in her research on the Evangelion project. Her tragic death during an experiment served as the catalyst for his actions and his obsession with achieving Instrumentality.
